Interview Guido Hettwer for "Metallrock Radio" (10/07)

Today “Metallrock Radio” is interviewing a band from Germany (Bremen) which with the album Back To The Roots released one of the best metal albums 2006 on the headbanger market. Finest powermetal. Established was the band 1988 and calls itself UNREST.

Metallrock: How did you come to the band name UNREST and what message should it transmit? Is UNREST supposed to be meaning that wherever you perform/ have a show it is over with the repose – hee, hee ?

UNREST: In 1988 our guitar player, Claus, came up with the name UNREST, which also means translated into German “rastlos”. We still think the name fits perfectly, since it goes with our music. And of course, it is also over with the repose when we are on stage or someone plays one of our albums.

Metallrock: UNREST exists since 1988 but then in 2001 has had a break for 3 years. What exactly were the reasons for this break?

UNREST: Some differences within the band has led to this involuntarily break of which I don’t want to enter into more details. Well, it surely might happen that it comes to differences of opinion when hanging around together for many years at the practice room, the studio or on a tour bus. In any case, we are very glad that we have found together again and get on very well with each other again.

Metallrock: UNREST has already played on the same stage with real popular bands that have a certain name and status like ICED EARTH, SINNER, W.A.S.P., DIO to name but a few, and you also played at the Metal Mekka Wacken in 1989. So, just tell us, how did you experience Wacken?

UNREST: Wacken has been of course one of the highlights in now almost 20 years of our band history. We have had a lot of fun being there on stage, and we hope much that we will get the chance sometime to rock at the W.O.A. again.

Metallrock: What concert has been the best, the most randy?

UNREST: Well, that’s not easy to tell. There were many shows that will always be unforgettable for us. Touring with W.A.S.P., DIO, ICED EARTH, SINNER and SCANNER as well as the already mentioned Wacken Open Air have been very big events for us. You just cannot render prominent one single show.

Metallrock: What bands did form you, what are and what have been your idols?

UNREST: Of course, bands like ACCEPT, JUDAS PRIEST, SAXON, AC/DC and some more did form us, and that’s what one can tell by our music up until today. In the past couple of years new metal genres were invented again and again but we never joined in, just because we are coming from the 80s, and we love this kind of metal.

Metallrock: You are also playing outside of Germany, how is German metal received abroad?

UNREST: Pretty good! We regular get celebrated in Switzerland and Italy. It is also very striking that predominantly people are coming to the shows there still wearing these lendary jeans-cowls  while here in Germany, unfortunately, you are hardly going to see that, only in NRW.

Metallrock: Is there a music video of UNREST or is something like this planned? If so, where can we watch it?

UNREST: In September 2007 we recorded our show at the „Back To Rock Festival“ in Switzerland. Perhaps we will release it as bonus DVD together with our next album. For the ones who don’t want to wait that long, there are 2 amateur videos taken by our fanclub available on our website and free for downloading.

Metallrock: Where do get fans more info on you? Please, give the addresses of your homepage, fanclub, shop etc.

UNREST: Our official website you will find at www.unrest-metal.de on which you are able to download 7 complete tracks of different albums for free. Of course, we are also present at myspace at www.myspace.com/unrestmetal. At our official fanclub “Wolfspack” you can register for a free membership at www.unrest-wolfspack.de and in addition get more infos, live reviews, photos and much more.

Metallrock: Who is writing the songs and who is the big boss in the band?

UNREST: Most times we develop the songs together, even though Claus often comes with a first good idea to the practice room. The lyrics are then written by our singer Sönke.

Metallrock: What are your plans for the future, what projects do you have in mind?

UNREST: At present we are working on our next album. Certainly, we cannot say yet when this one gets released, because we will take our time on that one. And then UNREST has its 20th Anniversary next year which we would like to celebrate adequate with our fans at some live shows.

Metallrock: What do you think of Metallrock Radio?

UNREST: We really think it is fantasic that there are web radios like yours that are devoted to metal and with that also contributes to that this kind of music will never die. For quite a while now we are realizing that there are many young people coming to the shows again which hadn’t been the case in the 90s. Everyone who is supporting the metal contributes to that.

In the name of Metallrock Radio Ironman says thank you for the interview and still wishes good luck and success on your musical way. Let your heads bang and keep faithful to your musical style. Heavy metal is the law!

UNREST: We too would like to thank you for this interview and say hello to everyone who is listening to Metallrock Radio... Bang Your Head!
